School's OUT for the summer!

A monumental event happened in the Bensen home this past week – school ended for our two youngest children. No more early morning routines building to a panic to catch the bus. No more “...because it’s a school night” excuses for early bedtimes. The cessation of their nine month school year means a lot less structure for our entire family. Maybe that’s one reason they’re called the lazy, hazy dog-days of summer. What little routine remains is often a lazy one.

For some of you the end of the school year has no great significance, but the change from spring to summer will bring some kind of change in routine for everyone – vacation time, long weekends away or new summer work hours. Even just longer hours of daylight and warmer weather have their affect.

This change of seasons gives each of us an opportunity – an opportunity to establish new positive routines in our diet and exercise – if we choose to take advantage of it.

For me, one goal I decided ONCE AGAIN to set for myself (are you listening Jill?) was to get back to the gym. My favorite workout time is from 6-7 am. During the school year the kids schedules makes that time an impossibility. I’d either have to go at 4:30 – that’s just too early. Or I'd have to go after they get on the bus at 8 am – and that’s just too late. Employees start arriving at 8:15 and it's go! go! go! until ... whenever! So during the school year I do floor exercises at home, and some walking, in an effort to keep in some kind of shape all winter.

But this past Monday morning, the first day of summer vacation, I was ready. My gym bag was packed with new travel size toiletries, sneakers and the all-important make-up all laid out next to the door. Ready. Alarm set. Go! I headed out the door for the gym at 5:45 am as planned. When the boys awoke they found a detailed note directing them to breakfast and the remote. And I did it all without even a twang of parental guilt. By the time everyone else in the family was up and going, I was home again. I had planned this for weeks. My goals were set. Mission accomplished.

This time during the transition of seasonal routines is very important. It is at this juncture that we will be laying the foundation for out behavior over the summer months. The lack of routine can take it’s toll on our healthy eating as well. Don’t let it creep up on you. Realize this … by NOT deciding to plan our meals, ramp up our exercise routines or even start one, we ARE DECIDING to do the opposite.

If you’ve opened your pool for the summer, get out there and do some laps. Or get your membership to the town pool. Take that bike off the racks, put some air in the tires and hit the road. Call a neighbor and see if they want a walking buddy for companionship and accountability. Buy a pedometer (and use it). Take the mornings to plan your meals. Stop at the fresh produce stands along the roadside instead of the newly re-opened ice cream parlors. Incorporate activity into your weekends away. Know what’s healthy to eat and what isn’t when you’re on the road this summer.

Whatever you choose to do now will be hard to undo in a few weeks time. Summer habits are going to happen whether we’re aware of them or not. Put some planning and thought into your new routines. Be conscious of those subtle decisions. We all have an opportunity before us in the next week or two. Let’s make the most of it!

"Commit to the Lord whatever you do and your plans will be successful." Proverbs 16:3

I just tried the Lite Nacho Snacks from Fiber Gourmet. They come in a box of 6 packages with each package being just one point. The packages have 2 grams of Chez-It like crackers for 80 Calories, 2 grams of fat, and a whopping 12 grams of Fiber. I felt like it was a lot of food for just one point and it tasted good too. I have tried several of the Fiber Gourmet pastas and I love them as well. If you are a volume eater you might want to give this product a shot but be warned, you will have to hide them from the children because they will like these too. Sugar

Tammy No- I love the idea of ordering the fruit plate. That is one thing I love about summer. I am a FRUIT LOVER. A bowl of watermelon or fresh strawberries just make me happy.
Sonia- I think if my scale had told me that after replacing the batteries I might have kicked it across the room. Great job with handling the situation and congrats on the weight loss.
Laurie- I hope you aren't too sore today after your ride yesterday. Sounds like you had a wonderful day with a lot of activity. Keep it up lady!!!
Susan- I am so glad that your tag Sale went well. Just think what you will be able to do with those funds to help our troops. The kids in our elementary school send boxes to the soldiers different times throughout the school year. The kids love getting the letters from the soldiers who have received the boxes of goodies and we can tell the troops really do appreciate any small treat sent their way. I pray that God will continue to watch over our troops and bring them home safely.
CathyJane- I am a school counselor so I completely understand how hard it is to take care of yourself during the school year when you are expected to take care of everyone else. Summer break is a wonderful time to regroup and get a solid grip on your program. Relax, read some great books, and prepare yourself mentally and physically to be the best teacher you can be for next year.
Mary- We all have our ups and downs. But that was last week. You are now done with that and ready to kick some butt. Good luck and hang in there.Sugar

Susan, I was able to watch it too! I'm so happy you got to see your son and to also put a face and voice to one of our soldiers who we so dearly love! Still praying for him and the rest of our troops! And the tag sale, girl that is just AWESOME!!

Girls, thank you for the support last night! It meant the world to me! I'm aiming for 100% today!

Jill I'm late in reporting in, but I was up just a little last Friday. 1.2lbs to be exact! yuck! Quite frankly I was embarrassed to post it!!! Anyway concentrating on today.... I think that will be my goal for July, to get in 100% days...

My oldest son flew in from FL Monday night and I'm so thrilled to be able to spend some time with him before my youngest has surgery on Tuesday...

Have a great Wednesday everyone. See you tomorrow night!

God Bless America!!!

Susan, I was able to catch the video you blogged about. How wonderful to put a voice to someone we've been praying for. I know you were thrilled to be able to 'see' him that way. I thank God for your son and others like him, who do what they do.

The last month of school is always a whirl wind for me...Today was my last day...so now I can focus on me again...I have such a tough time thinking about others and myself at the same time...I have been struggling with a sinus infection and bronchitis...and to top it all off I turned 45 a week and a half ago...

If I sound like a whiner...I apologize...Just a bit overwhelmed and need to catch up...so I am blessed to be in a profession where I get a lovely chunk of time to regroup:) So I have been reading the blogs...just haven't had a chance to blog in...As always it is wonderful to read about everyone's triumphs and challenges...Have a great night!

does look so wonderful. I can't imagine how you must feel seeing your beloved son after so many months. I just wanted

him we love him and support him and can't wait til he can come home.

Haven't been on in a while because life has gotten CRAZY for the last 2 weeks due to our Tag Sale...CRAZY and being ON PROGRAM is something I'm gonna have to work at but, I got in SOOOOooo much exercize carting boxes from the attic and the basement and then all the setting up and packing up that every time I stepped on the scale it hadn't moved at all!!! "Sheesh" I'm just glad THAT'S over! However, we did advertise the proceeds were going into the Platoon Fund for our son's platoon and we ended up making $1,001.32...I KNOW, I don't know if we just hit the weekend right or the economy is off and more people are tag sale-ing or what, but that was our motivation and WOW, it really paid off...now if I can channel that motivation into making permanent changes in my habits!

My son called from Afghanistan while we were doing the Tag Sale and we got to tell him what we were doing and he really got psyched! He told us they had a reporter embedded with them and that my son and a couple of other guys from the platoon were going to be on MSNBC. Well, it aired yesterday as a "Web Only" news clip...here's the link if anyone is interested. It's a 3 minute clip and you can see Bill (SPC William Yeske) at the 2:00 minute mark and hear his voice in the background at the 2:33 mark...So exciting as I haven't "seen" Bill since last August!

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3032619/ns/nightly_news/#37985944

Lots of boxes of goodies going out to these guys tomorrow so lots of packing and shipping going on tonight, then, pool day with the nieces tomorrow and hope to be in the meeting on Thurs....get ready for the family picnic/other sons birthday celebration on the 4th or 5th, what ever is the better weather day and then I can concentrate fully on ME! Hope you are all well and God Bless America!

Hi Kimmies!
I am having a good day so far...coming into the trouble time...but I finally rode my saddle horse for the first time this year (we seem to be rather behind). Anyway we had a great ride, she didn't groan when I sat on her-though she sighed when I got off. After working out this morning and riding this afternoon it should be interesting to see if I can walk tomorrow.

Guys, wanted you to know on those crazy Incredimail papers
and emoticons, etc. I use on my emails, there was one with Lady Liberty for the 4th! She was quite beautiful, blonde, and a dead ringer for our Kim. I've been sending it all day to Jillie, Mags, Ginsie, Kimmie, Donna Loo Who, DiDi and whomever else I have written to. and Patti. I told everyone to imagine Kim's uniform to be in our signature colors with rhinestones on her crown. Of course they are large and very sparkly. So far, everyone seems to like our precious Glo's idea!!! See you
later.

Good morning everyone. So I have a funny story to tell you all. Yesterday morning I stepped on the scale it came across the read out as Error Overload. Thinking it was a mistake I stepped on again just to have the same thing happen. I thought to myself maybe the battery needed to be changed so I changed the battery, held my breath and stepped on again. Once again, Error Overload. Talk about deflating the self esteem. I knew I had been really good yesterday and it should show happy numbers instead of overload. So yesterday I went and bought a new scale. I weighed in this morning and am happy to report that I am down 1.6 pounds. My lesson from all of this is if you don't like what you see on your scale go buy a new one. (LOL)

I love the firetruck idea. Mike is a volunteer fireman so I know all about firetrucks and firemen.

I had better get back to work. Talk with you all soon.

So I told my mom I would go to lunch with her and my aunt Doreen. We went to this diner called "Daddy-O's" and when I first looked at the menu I didn't see anything low calorie. My mom and Doreen ordered some chicken BBQ sandwich and french fries extra crispy. I finally saw what I was looking for, it was a "fruit plate" with cottage cheese. I figured I'd get a couple of strawberries and some cut up fruit in a cup. I was shocked to see a huge plate with watermelon, pineapple, grapes and honey dew melon (I don't like honeydew melon, but there was plenty of everything else!) So I had for lunch: A sugar free iced tea w/ extra lemon, 2 big pieces of watermelon, pineapple and grapes, and cottage cheese. I was so full I took home quite a bit of fruit!! So my fears were unfounded and I stayed within my points!!! I am so happy I didn't give in to my fears and had my mom drop me off while she went out to lunch without me!! See you all 100% Club people in a while!!

Hi Everyone!!
I really miss not seeing Kim live and in person, I hope things work out by tomorrow. I honestly don't think I will get used to the way the blog is now, I am sorry, but I don't like it. I lose my place from where I left off and I feel like I'm reading backwards. But I know I will eventually have to adapt.
If our new type of transportation is a fire engine I hope Max can be our "spokesdog" even though he isn't a Dalmation. I just got a new pair of red Nikes off of Ebay and they are leather and shiney, I can't wait to wear them on the firetruck!!
Petra:That is so fantastic, 7lbs. is epic!!! I love not being the only "nightowl", you are such a sweetie!! You are doing so well I am happy for you!! I've colored my hair every color you have but sadly I am now too old for that and now I strive to hide the gray!! Although I've been trying to do that since I was 20yrs. old.
Holly: You are very welcome!!
Laurie: It was very nice to "see' you tonight!! I am happy to hear you are getting right back on track if you have a slip, that is how you do it! It takes all your strength to walk away from the food, but you will be happy you did!! I used to love horseback riding as a kid, but when I got too big I was afraid to hurt the horse so I would not go to the person's house that had the horses. It was hard to do, because I loved the horses, but it was embarassing.
Diane: Good for your daughter, I hope she stays focused. My daughter wants to be an addiction/substance abuse counselor in California. I want to encourage her, but not to live so far away. I wish your daughter the best in anything she does!
Gloria: G L O R I A, Gloria!!!! You rock girl!!! 4 days in a row at 100% is awesome!! I do not know anyone that could go to a movie and not eat something! Don't be so hard on yourself!! It sounds like you are really loving your new found freedom, good for you, that is what Summer vacation is for!!
Sue Bea: That is such a blessing, I'm happy for you!! God does answer prayers and I love seeing/hearing the proof of that!!
I forgot to tell you guys I went to my mom's house this past weekend and she wanted to go out to lunch and usually I say no because I'm not sure if I can make good choises, but I decided to go this time. I will continue but I want to post all of this before I lose it.

Great work yacht-a-teers!!! The reports have been flyin' in today! I've been gone all day and just got on here after being in the chat and totally confused about firetrucks!!! I guess we got it determined what JULY will be --- that wasn't hard at all!!! Fire truck in the 4th of July parade to kick off a hotter-than-a-firecracker on program month!!! 24/100 is the number on our Fire Engine House!

But --- it's still June and we have had over 1/2 of our yacht-a-teers reportin' in ----- still a few to go ----- so come ashore and shout out a progress report!!! We're still sailing for two more days in June --- let's kick it up a notch for these last two days --- sailing over the ocean blue --- come on ---- everyone cheer!!! woohoo!!!

Congrats to all the losers who reported in today --- the yacht has come up outta the water a bit more as we have lightened the load!!!! Losers rock!!! Keep on sailin' to Slimville . . . . . . and be thinkin' about your new goals for JULY!!!!!! woohoo!!!! woohoo!!! woohoo!!!
