Passing it down ...

America recently celebrated one of Hallmark's favorite holidays — Mother’s Day. It's a wonderful time to reflect on all the things our mom’s have given us, and the things we in turn have passed down to our own children. Yes, there’s the good and the not-so-good.

I'll take a snack. Hold the BLTs...

Snacking wasn’t smiled upon while I was growing up. Oh, it wasn’t totally forbidden, but it all depended on when we asked. If it was within two hours of a meal, mom’s favorite mantra was, “You’ll ruin your appetite!” Well, for all you adults out there who are reading this, is this really a concern any more? I don’t think so!

Venting ...

I’m normally a very positive person. Even when I weighed 350 pounds, I usually could find the joy and happiness in life despite the overwhelming frustration with my size and my struggle with food. But there are times where you just have to vent. So, here goes …

My mother always told me not to use the word ‘hate’. Sorry mom. Don’t read this one.

There's just something about weekends ...

I don't know what it is. There's something about Friday afternoons, after a long week of work, that makes us just want to kick back, pull on a pair of jeans — and blow our diets. We do it over and over again. From Friday night to Sunday afternoon we pick — or binge — and put ON all those calories we've worked so hard all week to get OFF.

It's a mindset that has become so familiar to us, so much a part of who we are, that we feel destined to follow that same path forever.

The Lighter Moments In Life ...

Most of you know my story. In 2001 I weighed 350 pounds and found myself starting over AGAIN. It took me two years to reach my goal and during that time I learned a lot about myself. There were, of course, many exciting moments along the way, but there were also moments of disappointment, frustration and, yes, humor too. I thought I’d share one with you today…

FREE FOOD!

FREE FOOD! No, I’m not talking cost. It’s a term used by many diets to identify foods that are allowed on a relatively unlimited basis. Those of us with weight problems don’t eat because we are physically hungry. We eat because we like eating and we have a hard time recognizing when we are full. Offering a “free foods” list steers dieters away from high-fat, calorie-laden foods when we feel that need to eat.

Half-hearted dieting ...

I hate even asking this question. But I will because I care. Are you giving your weight loss your best effort?

If you’re like most people you have taken the time to invest in some kind of weight loss program. Whether it’s a formal program like mine or Weight Watchers, or maybe it’s a book you’ve read — either way, it’s still an investment. You’ve put the time into reading, comparing, making a decision and taking a course of action.

Kudos!
