Vacationing ... from our diets

Vacation. Just the word is enough to give me butterflies. Look it up: "leisure time away from work devoted to rest or pleasure." Sounds divine. Hey ... even the planning part is fun! We Americans work so hard all year and we deserve those precious days which, for most of us, are so rare.

Between my busy schedule and our very diverse family (two in grammar school and two working their way through college), a moment in time where we're all together is so very special. The only part of vacationing that stresses me out (besides paying for it) is the food. I still have those deeply buried demons that cry out, "How can you enjoy your vacation and not overeat?!" I mean, that IS what we think, right?

We go to the cabin by the lake and it's all about the snacks on the screened-in porch. We go to the beach and can't wait to pack the cooler. Disney? Forget it! And don't even think about 7 days and nights of endless gorging on a cruise ship. Why would we EVER spend the time and money going somewhere special and have to limit ourselves?

I think part of it, for me, has always been the fear that I'll 'miss out'. You know, this is my one chance. After this is over I won't be able to have the homemade chocolate chip cookies while we play cards at night. When will I EVER be able to eat pancakes with Mickey Mouse ears again? I'm chuckling even writing this, but it is, after all, part of this whole "eating thing", isn't it?

Going on vacation often means vacationing from our weight-loss regimen as well. Many of us, with our all-or-nothing personalities find it hard to indulge "just a little," and when we fall, we fall big time! The even bigger problem can be getting back on track when the vacation is over.

The truth is, it would be amazing if we could over-indulge during vacation without paying for it, but we can't. It takes a toll on so much more than our scales ... it can reverse progress, re-cement old habits, and diminish our belief in ourselves.

One way to avoid this trap is to make weight loss goals for vacation. You may choose to keep losing. Great! You may choose to stay the same – increasing your calorie allowance by a few hundred each day. Or, you may choose not to track during your time away. Whatever you do, do it in control. And most important of all, no matter what happens on vacation, set your goal to get back to your meeting, to your trainer, to your support group, and back on your food plan the moment you return.

This week's topic is all about what to pack and ways to make your vacation deprivation-free. But in the end, it WILL all come down to mindset. Focus on what you're NOT having and you'll be miserable. Focus on what you're achieving and your weight loss will be the (sorry...) icing on the cake.

Oh, one more thing, you can make light pancakes – with Mickey Mouse ears – whenever you want.

Hello all,
I never know when to switch blogs but I want to comment on a few things here before I move on to that potato chip bag.
Margaret-My sista' from another motha', we have got to talk about the "good old days" because I have seen all of the bands you mentioned, but I would love to see Rod Stewart!! I've seen AC/DC and Motley Crue and Kiss the most. I go to see Motley Crue every year with various bands, but it would be kool comparing concerts with you!! I also miss the days I could party all night and still go to work in the morning!! Now I go out as little as possible, and I haven't been in a bar drinking since I found out I was pregnant with my 19 yr. old.
Pepper- That is awesome!! Who the hell cares what kind of weight it was, 7 lbs. is fantastic!!
Jo- WTG Girl!!! You Rock!! I think of Penera's pastry dept. as the land of temptation and you avoided it totally, that is wonderful!! By the way, commando isn't an option for me, feels too icky!!
Thank you Phyllie I appreciate that, alot!!
I also agree, I think Pepper deserves the place of honor, next to Max and Bessie (the cutest Beagles in the world!!)
Bye Bye Bye!!!

Hi SueB, My beloved ex-MIL lives in a high rise overlooking
the St. John's River and the Alltell Stadium and we can watch the Jaguars from her bedroom window. She just loves
it and they have someone on call should the older people there need someone and when they need a lot of care, they
move to some place else. She is 90 in September. Heather and I go and take her to lunch; she spends every holiday with me. I think your precious and much-loved aunt will just thrive there. We take her to her doctor's pointments (all her children including my ex live out of town except for one SIL who helps, too,) It has worked out beautifully and I am so proud of Heather for her role in Grandmother's care. I just find more and more ways we are twins, no triplets!!! Remember? Love, phillie

Whoo so much has happened this week I have been busy moving my Dear Aunt Clar May into a Senior High Rise and helping her to reorganize and donate belongings to make her life less complicated. We ordered her first cell phone I will teach her how to use it. The apartment is finally set up and we only have to go shopping to fill it. I am going to encourage her to put in healthy choices she eats alot of convience type foods but will have a bigger freezer so we will make use of it. I have been thinking of our ~Firemen Hunks~ all week it has kept me on track. RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR hiccup! RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

TammyNo,
so glad you enjoyed the concert and stuck to your plan. I stuck to mine today at Panera. I didn't even sneak a peek at the bakery. I just ordered my sandwich as I had planned and felt very proud of myself. At this rate you and I can ditch the granny panties pretty soon. Or I should say replace them, we probably shouldn't go commando quite yet:)

Margaret, that's a lot of concerts girl.

rrrrRRRRRRRrrrr---rrrrrRRRRRRrrr---rrrrRRRRRRrrrrr!!!!

woohoo to all the loser food snobs from Monday night and to all the losers from all or any night --- woohoo!!!! The important part is the "loser"!!! yeah!!!

We've heard from all firetruckers except for about 6 of them -- we usually always have one or two who will post a goal but not report back in until the end of the month -- so we're really doing an awesome job reportin' this week! And it's never too late to report! Some weigh in later in the week - so be sure you still report even if it's not a Monday -- that was just the day we picked for the official reportin' day - but everyone is different with their weighing, week ending, etc. ---- but at any rate -- we're losing pounds and gaining goals!*!*!*!*!

TammyNO, seriously, you're going to see KISS? How COOL are you?:) I never saw Bon Jovi, tho I really do like the music. Have you ever seen Whitesnake? I saw Rush, Tesla, Whitesnake, Van Halen(with Sammy Hagar, not David Lee Roth), Guns N Roses, Queensryche--and the more mellow Chicago, Kenny G with Michael Bolton, Rod Stewart. My very first concert was Robert Plant(from Led Zeppelin in case anyone doesn't know) But I haven't been to any concerts in years--the last one was totally different line--I took Hunter and my sister Ginny to see Third Day and Michael W Smith with Max Lucado a few years ago for their birthdays(only 2 days apart). That was pretty neat.
And btw, I'm right there with ya as far as the granny panties go, lol:) And good job on your food planning. That's the best, Tammy:)

Way to go Pepper on that loss! That is AWESOME!

Hi Jillie...just reporting in. This has been a fantastic 100% week for me. The scales last week were unkind. I had been to my son's BBQ & I stayed on plan but I must have had to much salt. The water finally departed my body this week and I was down 7 lbs. I feel like probably about 4 lbs. water weight and about 3 in fat...oh well, it sure felt good!! I am feeling a great deal of motavation for the coming week. I hope all the Kimmies have a wonderful week & I will see you all on Thursday night!

Hi All,
I absolutely LOVE Bon Jovi and they did not disappoint!!!I'm so sorry Phyllis, I would have loved having you go with me!! I brought a yogurt with me so I would have something to eat after taking my Byetta shot, and I did feel weird when I looked around and I saw people eating hot dogs and pizza and fried dough, but then I felt good because I knew I wouldn't be paying for what I ate!! Jo, I thank you, I'm trying to look good, I really hope I look better than I did when I started!! Unfortunately I was too far away to throw anything on the stage, but his torn calf muscle didn't affect his performance!! By the way my nickers are "granny panties" and I don't want anyone to see them!! So what is so funny about my nickers Diane?! I'm just kidding, I laughed so hard I nearly wet myself!! You are too funny Jo!! You all have no idea how motivated you keep me and I love you for it!! Next month I will be going to a Kiss concert and I am planning to take a nice big salad with me!! Now that is preplanning!! Can you tell I'm an '80's gal?!! Good Night, I'm going to watch Big Brother After Dark now, I love that show!!
Toodles!!

Jillie, reporting in, I stayed the same grrrhhh! I didn't get discouraged though. I went to the basement and did my 30 mins. on the treadmill and 15 mins. on the Total Gym.

Your are doing well on your bike, remember, each added minute is progress.

Congrats to everyone reporting a loss today and for those who gained or stayed the same - it stinks I know, but we are not giving in to the lard, we are united in our lard busting efforts. We will go forward and conquer - right?right?

TammyNo, what the heck did you do to Jon Bon Jovi, I heard he was hurt. Did you throw your nickers at him? (Ahem, was that an inappropriate question?)

JO.

Phyllis M1 said,

July 12, 2010 2:52 PM

Jillsie, that is awesome you are adding tom your minutes on your bike and it doesn't matter if it's not a lot of minutes.
I did 25 mins. on my treadmill last night and then my floor
execises. I think today I will do Leslie Sansome just to
mix it up and then just l0 or l2 on the bike. I like to do the plan with power spurts. You do 45 seconds at performance and l5 seconds at aerobic for only 5 minutes. I do the rest on fat burn. This week I read in "Woman's World" magazine (I love that little magazine) that 30 minutes at a fat burn pace will burn fat better than a long workout at an accelerated pace (which is good to build endurance like planning for a marathon). I thought this made sense.

Hi all!

It's Monday so I'm just checking in.... First of all, my thoughts, prayers, and support go out to all of you and your families who are in need right now.

I'm back down the pound I had gained which kind of leaves me feeling like I'm back at square one again. I'm tired of that feeling, but at least the weight isn't continuing to escalate and I know when I go to put on my jeans in the morning they'll at least fit! But I want them to be getting loose! So I am committed to not giving up and hopefully the weight will continue to descend! I DID meet my exercise goal for the week which feels good.

My neighbor's water pipe leaked and flooded my condo downstairs. The workmen came today and are in the process of putting in new flooring. They've moved furniture into the kitchen and I can't get in there! That kind of temporarily screws up my pre-planning for today, but at least I won't be doing any extra munching either! Hope to join you later today.

Take care,
Shelley

I'm reportin' in to say that I've been doing quite well with my fruit/veggies -- have hit the mark all week! And my increasing bike minutes is coming along slowly -- I've been able to add 1/2 minute more w/o feeling the pain - slow but sure is the only way I can go - but I'm thankful for slow - it's better than a screaching halt (had plenty of those in my day!) My daily weigh ins have been up/down within a couple of pounds - will wait and give my weekly on Friday - that's the one that I count - I just weigh daily in order to keep a close watch.

rrrrRRRRRRRrrrrrr--rrrrRRRRRRRrrr---rrrRRRRRRrrrrr!!!!

Keep on reportin' in --- we have 19 firetruckers on board the truck -- and lots of good lookin' firemen to go around --- so get in here!!!! You're missin' the fun!!!!

WOOHOO for firetrucks!!! WOOHOO for healthy lifestyle living!!! WOOHOO for the firemen!!!!!! WOOHOO for WOOHOOS!!!!

Hi again, guys,

I want to say that we have the most wonderful collection
of loyal, loving, interesting and dedicated, and fun bunch
of Kimies. Not the least of which is our beloved DiDi. I
have gotten to know her quite well over the past little while and find that she is not only a wonderful and devoted
mom to her three beautiful girls, but also cherishes her
wonderful husband and writes so lovingly of him. This all
while she recently lost her beloved mother and is struggling with Dad right now. I find her to be a remarkably strong and wise lady and just wanted to say so. Love you Di.

Hi guys, I did lose two pounds -- and, as you know, have
been struggling with meds. I quit taking my expensvie and
potent HBP med. (I just don't need it) and never thought
about the fact that it had a diuretic in it. Well, my
weight had gone up l/, l, and then a total of two. I finally lost that two. And this two, but it took me two weeks to get straightened away!!! See you tonight. I did sell two houses, thank the Lord above.

HI all, I'm glad to hear some have lost some pounds! I found two of them. :?( I know why I found some...lack of planning, over-active fork, lack of exercise. I need to change the tape playing in my head to a positive, upbeat, motivating, perky one. I am not sure I have it in me to have all four of those at once so I'll try for two. I'm going for upbeat and motivating. I'll go put my whip and hairshirt away and put on a bright fire=engine red shirt to help me be more positive. Did you know that the E-1 Bronto fire trucks have buckets on them can actually go below grade level to rescue people? This is a very good thing as I fell off the cliff for a while.

TammyNo, I hope Jon appreciates all the beautifying going on at your apartment. You look maaahhhvelous daaahhling!

I'm glad we could help with the positive comments for your picnic.

I'm going to Panera on Tuesday so please send good thoughts my way. I actually printed off what I am having. I am skipping breakfast and having a Mediterranean Veggie sandwich for lunch. I'm switching the bread from Tomato Basil (I think that's what it said) to white whole grain which will save me about 160 calories. I printed a copy from their website so I remember what to ask for.

Have fun at the concert.

Phyllis, love the quote :)

See you all tomorrow for weigh in.

Jo.
