weight loss motivation, tools, and support

As far back as Marie can remember, she was taller, larger than anyone else. In junior high she was already over 200 pounds and was transferred to five different homerooms to avoid the verbal bullying about her weight. And that was just the beginning ...

Marie tried everything to lose weight. Back in the 1960s it was Weight Limited. She still remembers her meal plan for Physician's Weight Loss: 2 eggs for breakfast, 5 prunes for lunch and 1 lb of meat for dinner. Then there was Atkins, Weight Watchers (at least 100 times) and something akin to wrist bandaids which were supposed to curb your appetite — it didn't work. Neither did hypnosis, creams on the wrist (also a supposed appetite suppressant), or a myriad of calorie counting plans.

Next Marie turned to gastric bypass, but she didn't follow through with it because the doctor told her that she didn't have the support to be successful. Her family was behind her weight loss, but was very concerned about weight loss surgery.

Diet after diet, year after year, her self-doubt grew. Marie started believing she was destined to obesity. Her prayers to God and her aching heart seemed felt empty.

The first time Marie saw Kim was on the Today Show. Here was someone Marie could relate to. She bought a copy of Kim's book, Finally Thin, and was one of the first to sign up for online memberships. The meetings were great, the support, so helpful and Marie started losing weight. But her head really wasn't in the game. Here's an email she wrote to Kim nearly two years ago:

"Kim — As much as I want to lose weight I just don't want to give up all the good food — and Thanksgiving is coming. (I know, excuses!) Why am I so controlled by food?! I am going to keep watching all the archived meetings I can and maybe one day I will get it. Anyway, that's for being there when I call."

Marie DID get it. One year ago this past January, after several months of fighting inside herself, Marie made the decision to do it 100%. She hasn't looked back since.

The following thirteen months brought heartache (a breakup with her fiance), frustration and struggle. But they also brought change. Marie was learning moderation, patience and how to minimize and control cravings. She focused on her behavior, followed what she had planned every day. The scale moved slowly at times, but it was a steady loss, and those losses added up!

She reached out to other members, called Kim when she was down, and slowly the little weekly changes added up. In February of 2013, thirteen months after she made that decision to DO IT, Marie hit goal.

Marie thinks the best part of getting to goal is just having the weight loss end of it over with. Her whole life she shopped in Lane Bryant, Romans or Women Within. Now she can shop anywhere! She also loves the fact that her numbers are perfect: She's a size 8; Blood Pressure: 110/68; Cholesterol 145. Marie has gotten off all blood pressure meds and 1 diabetic med and the other one has been cut in half.

Marie lost a lot this past year, but she gained a lot, too. Friends. A support group that she counts on and gives back to. New recipes. A whole new life.

But Marie is quick to share the her biggest support in her journey was God. Here's her favorite verse:

Jeremiah 29:11 "For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."

Come on ... it's YOUR turn now!
