The Perfect Day To Start A Diet

 “I have two weddings this month. My kids are home with all their snacks. I can’t get to the gym and we're going on vacation in two weeks. Diet NOW?!”

You would think that with all the fresh produce and long days of sunshine for getting outside, summer would be the easiest time of year for a healthy lifestyle. But the lack of routine, get-aways and extended socializing makes it one of the hardest. Yes, summer can be a trying time for anyone looking to lose weight. So I headed to our family refrigerator calendar to see if I could find when the perfect time would be. Surely there must be a lull, some sort of break from food-focused festivities in a twelve-month span. I started flipping through the already heavily market up month of August.

There were already penciled-in picnics and cookouts and our annual family trek to Maine. The end of summer was noted with a neighborhood Labor Day get-together. I sighed realizing the boys would soon head back to school. Okay, summer is tough, but what about the rest of the year?

Retailers were already featuring bags and bags of early Halloween specials. Every candy bar ever made had appeared in Individually wrapped miniature form. As the month progressed there would be cornucopias and turkeys, pies and pastries and everything we need for the feast to end all feasts – the day synonomous with bounty – Thanksgiving. Let’s not even think about December … the ho-ho-holidays are killers on the waistline!

Then comes New Years. The highlight in the weight loss calendar must be the best as Americans flock to renew gym memberships and purchase diet supplements which boldly promise “Lose 10 pounds in10 days.” The actual holiday itself is steeped in open houses and hors d’oeuvre pushing parties, but after that? There’s usually a week or two before retail shelves are inundated with red hearts pink satin bows secretly covering pounds and pounds of decadent chocolate. This time of year also brings mid winter vacations, hot chocolate in the ski lodge and cruise line specials. Winter weather also curbs outdoor activities and motivation lags in the long nights and short, cold days.

Once vacation season wanes it’s time for Easter. Easter candy, Easter egg hunts, Easter feasts. Although lent could be a nice segway into a diet. And with bathing suit weather right around the corner there’s more incentive to trim away the winter pounds. But then there’s the rounds of graduations, weddings and showers. It almost seems as though the parties will never die down when Memorial Day kicks off S - U - M - M - E - R! And we’ve come full circle.

But wait. There’s more … there’s all the other “once a year events” like birthdays, (not just yours, but everyone in your family's), and anniversaries. What about stresses like break-ups and new relationships and moving and new homes and new jobs and no jobs. Deaths. Tragedies. Health issues, being layed up or being layed of or being unexpectedly layed over. What about all the millions of other holidays and celebrations and joyous or sad occasions that drive us together or pull us apart and in the center of it all ... there is food.

Discouraged, it dawned on me that there was really no convenient time to start a diet. (The Farmer's Almanac actually suggests that the months of August and September are the best.) Then, as I let the pages of my calendar fall back into place, I found it  ... THE DAY … the perfect day to work on my diet  ...  it’s TODAY!

A friend recommended this site as Kim has helped her be very successful. I am so tired of the yo yo, of not being able to keep it off, or even lose it since I am now 65. But I am ever hopeful and trying to be positive. Where do I go from here?
